COULD ALL WALKS LEADERS PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS WRITTEN BY DAVID HAYES IN THE USE OF THE ADDITION TO FIRST AID KIT –  THE ETREX 10 GPS DEVICE

Further to LNB  recent email to all SLR Walks Leaders

Instruction sheets(laminated) will be included with the Etrex 10 GPS and should be passed to the next Walk Leader on the Programme.

1).EMERGENCY USE  -To summon Emergency Services.

*Use Etrex to find your precise Grid Ref  (see below as to how)

*Phone 999 and give the Emergency Services this Grid Reference.

USE OF ETREX TO FINDGRID REF.:-

*In an open location SWITCH ON by pressing the Light/On/Off switch(right hand side of machine)

*A menu will appear on the screen

*using Toggle Button(at top right hand corner of device) TOGGLE TO “MARK WAYPOINT” and press Toggle

*Read the OS BNG GRID REFERENCE displayed

(note these are  5 figure and hence more accurate than the usual 3 figure Horizontal and Vertical Grid Refs)

*Plot location on your OS Explorer Map (if unsure how to do this follow the directions given under “General Information: National Grid Reference System” which can be found in the Index of all OS Explorer Maps)

*Switch off  the Etrex 10.

(CURRENTLY DRAFT) INSTRUCTIONS FOR USING THE ETREX 10 TO ENABLE AN EASY RETURN TO THE START OF THE WALK

(these should be used if you are lost and need to  either i)re-find your route and/or ii) your way back to the start of the walk)

WE PLAN TO FIELD TEST THESE INSTRUCTIONS TO ENSURE THEY ARE EASY TO FOLLOW AND WORK CORRECTLY.

At start of Walk :-

*Switch on Etrex 10

*Place on Car Roof

*Toggle to “MARK WAYPOINT”

*SAVE by pressing TOGGLE

*Make note of WAYPOINT No.

*Switch off ETREX 10

2) If in  LOCATION DIFFICULTY  and need Guided return to Start :-

*Switch On

*Toggle to “WAYPOINT MANAGER”

*Tap Toggle :List of Waypoints displayed

*Select  Start of Walk Waypoint :Toggle

*Details of Start of Walk Waypoint displayed

*Press “Back”  twice

*Select “COMPASS”:Toggle

*Distance to Start & Bearing are displayed which can then be followed.
